Anyone who has ever experienced it will never forget it. It is the darkest night of the soul. Once called "melancholia," it now carries the benign-sounding moniker "depression." But when it descends on you and holds it in its deathly grip, the word "depression" would be laughable –if you could laugh. On good days, you see the world through cotton wool, the voices of others (even those who love you) are distant, empty echoes, your body bears down under the weight of a huge granite chunk. On bad days, there is terror around every corner: unexplained, inexplicable, unidentifiable horrors….
