There’s a moment in Charles Curran’s memoir Loyal Dissent: Memoir of a Catholic Theologian where he describes a Vatican meeting with Cardinal Ratzinger in 1986. This was before the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith deemed him "not suitable or eligible to teach Catholic theology" later that same year.
     Curran does a masterful job describing the meeting. But what particularly interested me was his description of the renowned moral theologian Bernard Häring, who was at the meeting in support of Curran.
     During his stay in Rome at that time, Curran went to Häring’s church for Eucharist. By this time in his life, Häring had lost his larynx to cancer. "He learned to speak from his diaphragm," Curran says, "but at times he was very difficult to understand."
