Editorial
When Senator John Edwards launched his U.S. Presidential bid last December, he made the announcement in the backyard of Orelia Tyler’s flood-ravaged home in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward. "We need to ask Americans to be patriotic about something beyond war," he said.
Since his announcement, the centrepiece of Edwards’ campaign has been an anti-poverty agenda. Some call it a crusade, but Edwards has crafted serious proposals to eradicate poverty in the United States.
For starters, the former Democratic Vice-Presidential nominee has a plan for universal health care. His proposal would require uninsured Americans to buy insurance from a pool of private plans, although an option would exist to buy into a program based on Medicare. Employers would have two choices: Either provide a healthcare package to their workers, or pay into a national fund for the uninsured.

Editorial
Earlier this month, Senator Hillary Clinton spoke to a small gathering at Hostos Community College in New York City. "Many Americans are nervous about their own lives," she said. "For many people, they’re being encouraged to think that their problems are due to immigrants. But really their problem is they’re in an economy that isn’t working for everyone."
This is the sort of speech Senator Clinton delivers on a regular basis. Her progressive positions on immigration, children’s health, and veteran’s care are well established. That should please progressive and liberal voters. But Clinton remains an enigma to many Americans –especially some of her liberal supporters. Sometimes there appears to be no end to the question: Who is the real Hillary?
Some critics say she’s betrayed those liberal supporters, and is only interested in winning. But conservatives rail against her position on numerous issues too.

Editorial
by Robyn Lee
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently visited Canada to encourage –among other things– more urgent government action against global warming than Ottawa’s "timid" climate change plan.
Governor Schwarzenegger’s point is well taken. It’s the Harper government’s timidity on environmental action that’s been particularly frustrating. Ottawa is responding feebly to public anxiety about the environment, not only blaming the uncertainty of how environmental policies might affect the economy, but also the former Liberal government’s inaction to lay the groundwork.
As in the United States, it’s not the federal government that’s taking a leadership role on the environment, but rather consumers and corporations who respond to consumer "green" demands. They understand that the cost of not acting on the environment is far greater.
Even the Ontario government’s initiatives seem tentative and almost apologetic. One example. Prompted by the provincial waste disposal crisis, the Ontario government would like Ontarians to cut back on the 7 million plastic grocery bags they use every day. If we don’t voluntarily cut our usage in half by 2012, the
[click on article title to read the complete article]

Contemporary atonement ideas have succeeded primarily in turning God into a child-abusing heavenly parent. They have also turned Jesus into being the ultimate, perhaps even the masochistic, victim of a sadistic father God.

While the violence and intolerance in the world seems to be spinning out of control, I am fortified by the peace and harmony to be found in our little Costa Rican village. Not that it’s paradise here, but the kind of things that go on are definitely chicken soup for my CNN-besotted soul.
When we first moved into our current house in Costa Rica’s central valley, one of our neighbours saw my very pregnant wife and decided to throw us a baby shower. Entering her backyard patio, we found a bevy of other neighbours gathered beside a pile of gifts. As if this wasn’t enough, they also took it upon themselves to pray for us and the baby, a blessing that was enhanced by several of them gently placing their hands on my wife’s huge belly.
Dazed by this unabashed expression of good will and caring, we stayed for rice and beans and some homemade dessert made from condensed milk. The only cloud on my mental skies was the question
[click on article title to read the complete article]

by Maura Hanrahan
In his characteristic caustic tone, Christopher Hitchens tells us that religion is the cause of every evil in the world. According to Hitchens, most recently the author of God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, religion is to blame for, among other things, the long-term war in Northern Ireland. Hitchens fails to recognize that people there were not killing each other for religious reasons. Northern Ireland is a relatively homogenous society, and such societies tend to divide along religious lines. That in itself doesn’t necessarily cause problems. But in this case, it translated into economic privilege for some and deprivation for others. All this is lost on Hitchens, who is, tellingly, a supporter of the American war against Iraq.
Also secure on the bestseller lists is Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion. In this book, the evolutionary biologist condemns the false and "pernicious" belief in God. Sam Harris also attacks Christianity in his Letter to a Christian Nation: The End of Faith.

A Supreme Court of Canada ruling earlier this year continues to raise critical questions about how we recognize the rights of the disabled in this country.
Specifically the ruling (which was delivered on March 23) says VIA Rail must make their passenger cars more accessible to travellers in wheelchairs. Does the financial cost outweigh the statistical need for such a concession? Many argue those in wheelchairs should be guaranteed to a life equal to everyone else, and if they wish to board a train using their own personal wheelchairs over the ones supplied by VIA, that should be their prerogative. But only .5 percent of the rail users are disabled. Should VIA have to spend between $48 million to $92 million (after initially spending $29 millon on the cars) and then invest another $100 million to bring the cars into service? The Supreme Court said yes by a 5-4 ruling.
It’s helpful to see the recent Supreme Court of Canada within the context of what’s happening internationally. In a resolution
[click on article title to read the complete article]
