THE JUST SOCIETY
A recent United Nations (UN) report on Canada didn’t receive the attention it deserved. But the report was clear: Despite the country’s economic prosperity, Canada is neglecting its poor and disadvantaged.
There was some good news in the report. Canada’s poverty rate has dropped from 13.7 percent in 1998 to 11.2 percent today. Still the report says, "…poverty remains very high among disadvantaged and marginalized individuals and groups such as Aboriginal peoples, African-Canadians, immigrants, persons with disabilities, youth, low-income women and single mothers."
The UN report does say Canada ranks at the top of the United Nations Human Development Index. There’s also praise for improvements in equal pay for equal work, plans to improve health care, and extending maternity benefits.
