We live in a modern Babylon, one largely unrecognized as such, all the more seductive because of its mostly benign and benevolent face. Indeed, to a large extent, Babylon also lives in the church, so thoroughly has it (through us) been infected with the "spirit of this age." Modern culture functions as a rival lord in our lives..

The temptation to consider power an apt instrument for the proclamation of the Gospel is the greatest temptation of all. We rationalize and justify the use of power as something good. With this line of thinking crusades, took place, inquisitions were organized, Native Americans enslaved, positions of great influence were desired, Episcopal palaces, splendid cathedrals and opulent seminaries were built.
