EAST COAST TRAIL JOURNEY
by Maura Hanrahan

If you can do the Fort Amherst ascent, you can do anything. This is my first thought upon reaching the summit just north of the Big Dam. I look across to see Cabot Tower, a century old castle-like structure atop Signal Hill –the sentry that guards St. John’s Harbour. It is perhaps a mile away, across the Narrows, the watery tickle that hides one of North America’s most sheltered harbors. An unusually hot September sun beats down on the huge, ancient rocks that rise out of the ocean as high and straight as birch trees, holding up the land on which Cabot Tower sits. For once, I am looking down on them....
