Over 12 years ago I volunteered to work on transitional housing project for homeless people. Most individuals listened sensitively when we spoke about homelessness. But that wasn’t the case when the subject turned to building social housing.

     Just raising the issue of government financing affordable housing projects ignited sharp warnings about potential "boondoggles," "waste," and "ghettos."...
