THE WONDER OF THE ANIMALS

Last month, as I stood on the frozen Labrador Sea and tried to fend off hypothermia, I was struck by the antics of the gulls nearby. A fraction of my size, herring gulls –sometimes rather disparagingly called fish hawks– are much more able than I am to withstand sub-Arctic wind and cold. Their feathers are like ovens, granting them a protection that allows them to dip in and out of the frigid water in their active, carefree manner. The thick skin on their legs and feet is just as effectively insulated….
