TRANSFIGURE YOURSELF

by Gerry McCarthy
In the new play Frost/Nixon, the playwright Peter Morgan imagines a late night telephone call from Richard Nixon to talk-show host David Frost. In a drunken rant, Nixon talks about "the smart asses at college. The high ups. The well-born. The people whose respect we really wanted."
I thought of these lines recently when I read about artist Wangechi Mutu in Interview magazine. She talks about growing up middle-class in Kenya, but then moving to the United States where she "entered the working class because I was an artist and very poor. I became a whole different type of thing."
