SOME THOUGHTS FROM THE "GHETTO"

by Maura Hanrahan

Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente began her year with an all-out assault on the people of my island home, Newfoundland. (Forgetting, presumably, the hospitality we at the province’s Multi-Cultural Women’s Association showed her during her 2004 visit). Miffed by our provincial government’s political protests of Ottawa’s greed over offshore oil, Wente called this place the world’s most "vast and scenic welfare ghetto." She told Premier Danny Williams, and the people he represents, not to "bite the hand that feeds them," adding, not once but twice, "I like Newfoundlanders, I really do."
