PEACEKEEPING AS IMPERIALISM

A creeping sense of unease has always come over me when the subject of peacekeepers comes up. And the topic does come up a lot. Canada lauds its peacekeepers, celebrates them even. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, who invented peacekeeping, was voted one of the top ten Canadians of all-time by CBC viewers. More and more frequently, former peacekeepers are interviewed on radio or television, often discussing the trauma they suffer on their overseas missions. There are peacekeepers’ associations, formed to support peacekeepers and promote the institution.
