Speak of fasting today and you’ll probably hear reminiscing. "Remember the smell of a fish-fry filling the house on Fridays?" "Remember agonizing over breaking a promise to give up sweets for Lent?" Or: "You’re too young to remember this, but . . . " –and we fill in the blanks with tales of fasting, and how it marked us as Catholics in the community.
